Coaching

I played soccer in high school. Not always well, but I played. I was a goal tender (the coolest position on the field) and while I didn't need to kick the ball a lot, I did need to know how.

This particular skill was not my strong point. I remember standing on the field one day and asking for help. Here is the advice I got... "Just kick the ball over there." Not really helpful, in fact it made me feel worse. I needed to know exactly how to make the ball go "over there" and the confidence to keep trying until I got it right. Now I just felt stupid. Should I somehow just know how to do this?

The answer is "no". Not everyone is instantly good at everything. I needed someone to take the time to break down the process and work with me until I got it.

I try to remember that feeling whenever I teach or coach. I am here to help empower, encourage and support you toward what you want.

It was a trusted advisor who helped guide me to the success I have today. Now I am able to turn around and be the same for others.

The $1000 A Day Story

So, everybody knows setting up the business portion of a business is about as fun as having oral surgery. In the interest of trying to keep myself amused during the process I've tried to keep myself open to lots of possibilities and be as optimistic as possible. Since women frequently undervalue themselves in whatever market they choose to be in, and I'm no exception to that, and also because I'm really not comfortable discussing numbers with people without some sort of guilt or shame, I decided to try a little experiment with my friends and family to help me get over some of those issues. I decided to pick a kind of random amount of money that sounded like a lot to me and to tell my family and friends that was what I was worth a day. I chose $1,000 a day.

Lots of my friends know that I've hired a business coach (Amy Ketteran) and are very supportive. I think they thought the coaching would primarily extend to setting up paperwork systems and a website. Many of them thought coaching would help me determine a competitive hourly rate, I've had to explain that it's by the project. Now when they ask what I've learned from coaching I tell them "I've learned so much, I'm getting ready to start incorporating, I'm learning about what I can and can't claim on my taxes and you know what? I'm worth $1,000 a day."

When I make this claim I make sure I have a sunny smile on my face and that I sound very assured of this. None of my friends have sat slack-jawed, which is good, and none of them has tried to argue me down. A few have actually said "Oh my God, that's great Joyce!" I look forward to the day when I can look them straight in the eye and say "You know what, I've been doing this so long I'm worth $2,000 a day now."
